A gala evening held in Cloncurry has provided a much-needed social celebration for residents across the shire.

The Cloncurry Gala Evening was held on Friday, October 30, to celebrate 18 months on from the 2019 monsoonal flood event and to enjoy each others company following heavy COVID-19 restrictions.

Cloncurry Shire Council community development officer for recovery, Courtney McMillan, organised the event and said the event was made possible by funds received from Western Downs Regional Council to commemorate the flood event and to help lift community spirit.

"It was a great opportunity for everyone to come together and catch up with people they haven't seen in a long time," Ms McMillan said.

"Following the COVID-19 restrictions I thought the gala event was something to look forward to, dress up and have something that wasn't a regular event in town."

The event was a sell-out with 131 guest attending the event at the Cloncurry Shire Hall.

"Due to COVID-19 restrictions, we were definitely at capacity. We tried to have as many people as we could while still adhering to the COVID-19 restrictions," Ms McMillan said.

"It was a great event including a three course meal, bar facilities and a live band, even though we couldn't get up and dance due to restrictions.

"We also had prizes the Belle of the Ball presented to Teanna Green and Beau of the Ball presented to Kye Wehrman."

Ms McMillan said the bar was run by Quamby All Sports Association, with funds going back into the community.

"We have been advised that the proceeds raised through the bar service would go towards the Cloncurry Hospital Auxiliary or towards the St Andrew Garden settlement," she said.
