One of Wagga’s most highly anticipated events has set a date, so mark it down in your calendar.  The 2019 Gumi World Championship Race will be held on March 2 and South Wagga Apex’s Josh Paul said they are changing a few things up.  “It will be held on a Saturday afternoon and we have teamed up with Cork and Fork to make it into more of a festival,” he said.  “The community really responded to it well to it last year,” he said.  “We want to bring Gumi back to what it was.  “It started in 1976 and it stopped in 1995 and then South Wagga Apex took over in 2011.”  Mr Paul said they are hoping by having it on Saturday, it will encourage more people to come down and build rafts.  “People can start building over the Christmas and School holidays instead of leaving it to the last minute,” he said.   “Keep it simple with plenty of shade and plenty of flotation devices.”  The 2018 Gumi World Championship Race drew a crowd of hundreds down to Wagga Beach, where about 150 people battled it out in five separate races for the title of world champion.
