Bullocks make 344c/$2237 at Charters Towers


There were mixed quality lines of slaughter cattle offered at Charters Towers, as well as a good line of store cows.


Charters Towers combined agents yarded a total of 1274 head on Wednesday, consisting of 904 prime cattle and 367 store cattle.

The prime cattle consisted of 225 bullocks, 24 heifers, 529 cows and 126 bulls. Store cattle consisted of 207 steers, 160 heifers and three cows and calves.

Cattle comprised mixed quality lines of slaughter types, as well as a good line of store cows.

The yarding was drawn from Hughenden, Georgetown, Greenvale, Burdekin, as well as local and coastal areas.

Prime quotes:

Bullocks were quoted as 15c dearer, heifers were 10c easier, cows were 15c dearer and bulls were 10c easier on last week's rates.

Steers and bullocks under 500kg sold to 342.2c and averaged 291.6c, and those over 500kg topped at 344.2c to average 323.2c. Heifers under 440kg sold to 261.2c and averaged 190.8c, while heifers over 440kg topped at 271.2c, averaging 271.2c. Cows under 400kg made 241.2c and averaged 164.5c, while cows over 400kg reached 274.2c, averaging 247.7c. Bulls under 450kg made 279.2c and averaged 222.6c, while bulls over 450kg reached 310.2c to average 275.4c.

Bullocks topped at 344c for ox sold on a/c Paul Minuzzo that weighed 650kg to return $2237/hd. Best priced trade heifers were presented on a/c Allendale Pastoral Co that sold 271c and weighed 475kg to return $1288/head.

The top pen of cows were sold by D and A Forster for 274c and weighed 530kg to return $1453/hd. Bulls sold on a/c Chiesa and Sons topped at 310c and weighed 635kg, to return $1969/hd.

Store quotes:

Store cattle were in limited supply, however there were some very good quality small lines of light weaners presented from the local area.

Steers under 200kg reached 252.2c to average 252.2c, steers 200 - 320kg sold to 300.2c, averaging 263c, and steers 320 - 400kg topped at 295.2c and averaged 277.2c. Heifers 200 - 320kg sold to 202.2c, averaging 164.4c, heifers 320 - 370kg made 236.2c to average 192.9c, and heifers over 370kg topped at 220.2c, averaging 204.5c.

A pen of 15 steers a/c Alexander and Lyon made 300c and weighed 262kg, returning an average of $786/hd. A good pen of heifers a/c Messmate Pastoral Co made 220c, weighed 348kg and returned an average of $765/hd.
