Charters Towers Combined Agents yarded a total of 1694 head on July 4, made up of 945 prime cattle and 748 store cattle.
The prime cattle consisted of 130 bullocks, 46 heifers, 638 cows and 131 bulls. Store cattle yarded: 420 steers, 283 heifers and 45 cows calves.
Cattle comprised large lines of cows and bulls in fair order with a few bulllocks. The yarding was drawn from Richmond, Mt Isa, Cloncurry, Georgetown, Woodstock, Townsville, Coastal and Local Areas.
Prime Quotes:
Bullocks were quoted 14c dearer, heifers were 4c dearer, cows were 6c dearer and bulls were 7c easier on last week’s rates.
Heifers under 440kg sold to 231.2c and averaged 225.2c, while heifers over 440kg topped at 223.2c. Cows under 400kg made 186.2c and averaged 123.7c, while cows over 400kg reached 214.2c, averaging 185.6c. Steers and bullocks under 500kg sold to 254.2c and averaged 225.2c, and those over 500kg topped at 263.2c to average 243.9c. Bulls under 450kg made 255.2c and averaged 216.2c while those over 450kg sold to 262.2, averaging 228c.
A pen of bullocks topped at 263.2c for five ox sold on a/c J.Pulford, weighed 616kg to return $1621/hd. A pen of trade heifers were presented on a/c Maitland STN, made 231c to weigh 430kg and return $994/hd.
The top pen of cows were sold by Pajingo Past Co, for 214c and weighed 562kg to return $1204/hd. Bulls sold on a/c Lorne Hill topped at 262c and weighed 588kg to return $1542/hd.

Store Cattle were made up of smaller lines of mixed quality cattle including a few runs of cattle hailing from the gulf country. All cattle sold to competitive rates especially heifers.
Steers under 200kg reached 268.2c, average 224c,steers 200 – 320kg sold to 246.2c, averaging 230.3c, and steers 320 – 400kg topped at 245.2c and averaged 221.6c and steers over 400kg reached 243.2 to average 234.3. Mickeys under 400kg sold to 255.2c, averaging 190.2c. Heifers under 200kg topped at 206.2c and averaged 183.3c, heifers 200 – 320kg sold to 208.2c, averaging 171.1c, while heifers 320 – 370kg made 198.2c to average 189.9c.
A pen of 13 steers a/c Traxford Pty Ltd made 268.2 and weighed 198.5kg returning an average of $532/hd. A good pen of four heifers a/c Traxford made 206.2, to weigh 207.5kg to return $42/hd. Six cows and six calves sold on a/c of BW & MI Landsberg returned $1100/unit.
