It was to present a great line of bulls, while not being restricted by numbers, that led to the establishment of the Carinya Garglen Building a Legacy Sale.

The Bishop family, Garglen Stud, and Kirk family, Carinya Stud, have invested heavily in genetics and feel that they will present young Brahman sires, most suitable for a range of market requirements and environments within the Australian cattle industry.

Both families agreed that there has been light-hearted discussion about creating a sale for some years.

"With the increasing involvement from the next generations, we felt confident that the timing was right for the families to present a line of bulls that are the result of the genetic investment we have made and continue to make," Shane Bishop said.

The inaugural sale will offer 108 industry relevant, grey Brahman bulls that are backed by in-herd performance recording, scientific and raw data.

The sale draft will be represented by industry-leading genetics, not readily accessible to other breeders. The Kirk and Bishop families look forward to welcoming you at the Glenlands sale complex at 9am on Wednesday October 25.

A total of 108 industry relevant, grey Brahman bulls that are backed by in-herd performance recording, scientific and raw data have been catalogued for the first annual Carinya Garglen Building a Legacy Sale on Wednesday, October 25.

THE GARGLEN APPROACH

While the Bishop family had been breeding Brahmans since 1955, it was not until July of 1962 that the Garglen stud herd was registered, as Australian Brahman Breeders' Association (ABBA) stud No. 63.

In a true family operated business, Shane and Sandra Bishop, along with their son Joshua, and the Garglen herd are based at Old Delargum, Bauhinia.

"The passion for breeding Brahmans has been an inherited gene through the generations of the family. As proof, Josh and Matt, along with their partners own Garglen S and our daughter Rachel and her family own Garglen BR," Mr Bishop said.

He said they love Brahmans for their adaptability, hardiness, low maintenance, profitability and the challenge of breeding to the highest of standards.

"Their majesty, presence, and personality is infectious."

The Bishops strive to produce phenotypically correct, fertility-driven, adaptable cattle, that are suitable for any type of environment in Australia. Their primary focus is on fertility, udder correctness, and maintaining growth that will suit all markets.

Mr Bishop said good genetics is the main profit driver of any seedstock business, and to accomplish this goal the family is always seeking phenotypically correct cattle that have longevity in a range of environments.

"It is essential to research the entire herd from where we source genetics. We have a strong focus on growth patterns that we feel will achieve the required specifications across a range of markets.

"We have also embraced the opportunity to introduce new genetics from the USA, that we feel have a lot to offer.

"In the last five years, we have purchased the Australian semen rights from two outstanding young sires from the Cutrer family of BRC Ranch in Texas.

"The inaugural Carinya Garglen sale will feature the first release of male progeny from the world-renowned BRC Dutton 376/8. Along with his impressive depth of pedigree, his progeny are reflecting his much sort after attributes of structural correctness, near perfect sheath and testicles, and outstanding carcase traits.

"More recently purchased from BRC ranch, is another outstanding young sire of the future, in BRC Boombox 38. With calves just hitting the ground now, we are very impressed with what we see and look forward to presenting a line of Boombox bulls at the sale in 2025.

In continuation of the Kirk and Bishop families ideal of sharing genetics, the Kirks have taken the opportunity to swap a share in BRC Boombox, in return for a share in LMC Polled Hoss, a very impressive polled sire from the La Muneca Ranch in Southern Texas that Matt Kirk secured in 2021. Hoss progeny is now being born at Carinya and Garglen and will be presented at the 2025 sale.

This program of shared genetics all came to life with the initial combined purchase of the $100,000 sire in Willtony Blundstone, in 2015.

"Blundstone has been one of, if not, the most influential sire introduced to the Garglen herd. His progeny have been outstanding and regular sale-toppers when offered at auction. Blundstone females are 100 per cent retained in the herd and have regularly found their way into donor programs at Garglen."

Matt Kirk said his family's ongoing passion for the Brahman at Carinya is due to the breed having made the most positive gains in phenotypic quality, combined with the Brahmans' weight for age and survivability in the harsher times. Picture supplied

THE CARINYA METHOD

The Carinya stud was established by the Kirks in 1980, with subsequent family branches having been registered since that time.

Family patriarch John Kirk is the company principal at Carinya, while Matt Kirk is Carinya M, Mitchell, and Sophie Kirk are Carinya J, Lachlan and Stephanie Kirk are Carinya L, and Brittany Kirk is Carinya B.

All of these programs are run in the North Burnett region, with Carinya situated at Gayndah, while Carinya M is based at Mundubbera. The other affiliate studs have their cows run on company properties in and around these towns.

Matt Kirk said their ongoing passion for the Brahman is due to it being the breed that has made the most positive gains in phenotypic quality, combined with the Brahmans' weight for age and survivability in the harsher times that are inherent to grazing in Australia.

"The Brahman can meet market specifications off grass when seasons are with us and can withstand droughts better than any other breed when conditions are poor."

Mr Kirk said the 'Carinya type' is something that has been built over a long period, based on bone and fleshing.

"Dad always talks about a straight back which flows into a nice bean hump, which leads to good eye muscle figures. Coincidentally, cattle like this are most often those that have a good constitution.

"On the female side of the equation, functional udders are non-negotiable as well as a positive pregnancy test every year. We strive for feminine females that are long-necked, have the right angle into the shoulders, and a wide thurl set and pin bones. This is the standard set by John and the principle has stood the test of time."

He said sourcing genetics internationally and domestically are equally important for Carinya.

"A twofold reason for buying domestically is we use a lot of bulls to naturally mate cows and secondly to continue to introduce new bloodlines, which gives us an outcross. How can we expect other seed stock producers to buy our bulls if we are not prepared to do the same?

"In saying this, we are always on the lookout for new international genetics if they are better than what we currently have. There is no point in using a bull just for the sake of using an imported bull. They have to bring something new to the table and I believe the new sires we have represented in the catalogue do so and the ones we have used in the past have a proven record at auction."

IMPECCABLE BRAHMAN GENETICS

The Garglen sale draft will include sons and grandsons of Willtony Blundstone, and 16 high-performing sons of BRC Dutton, the first release of Dutton male progeny in the Australian market. The Bishop family are impressed with the growth rates of Dutton progeny, being well represented in the top five to 10 per cent for 200, 400 and 600-day growth EBVs.

Also to feature in the Garglen draft are six Carinya Kirkwood sons, a sire that needs no introduction to the Brahman industry. They are known widely for their masculinity, breed character and carcase attributes. Other sires represented in the Garglen team include V8 Noble 458/7, NCC El Toro, NCC Bankroll and NCC Eton.

"The Garglen sale team has been sensibly prepared on a silage base ration that will not affect the longevity of their performance, and they are still displaying great growth and carcase attributes for their age.

"Initial semen and morphology testing has been reflected by their modest preparation with above average results.

"Scrotal measurements are well within industry standards and all test results will be available on sale day. We are confident that the phenotypical presence and performance of the bulls will speak for themselves."

Carinya will offer the first auction progeny of 4F Accelerator, Moreno Kyrios, Toy Boy Conrad, NCC Kushner, and NCC Avenger.

Mr Kirk said that it is undoubtedly, the best and biggest draft of bulls Carinya has assembled, with catalogued sons sired by industry leaders in NCC Sugarwood, JDH Encino, Willtony Blundstone, and JDH Hudson.

"There are five homozygous polled bulls in the Carinya draft, including the world's first offering of polled Encino sons, and Sugarwood sons as good as we have offered."
