Graziers claim compensation
The Australian Woolgrowers and Graziers Council issued a stern warning to the government: reduce the high levels of protection given to inefficient manufacturers or risk AWGC pressing strongly for full compensation for the disadvantages imposed on rural exporters.
"Primary producers are being crippled by high protection given to inefficient manufacturing industries," AWGC executive officer David Trebeck said.
"In the national interest it is quite ridiculous to penalise efficient, export oriented rural industries in order to prop up ailing uncompetitive manufacturers. This gets us nowhere, it doesn't even maintain employment in those highly protected industries as the recent annual report clearly showed."
