When local producer John Turley pulled into the Gold City sale for a social day to buy maybe 'one or two bulls', the prices were too good not to go home with a few more.
Mr Turley and his wife Sally from Charters Towers became the equal largest volume buyers at the conclusion of the sale, after securing themselves five grey and seven red Brahman bulls for an average of $4333/head.
The Turleys are based on Wandovale, a 45,325 hectare cattle property situated north west of Charters Towers, where they operate part of their mixed breeding and fattening operation in conjunction with their other Queensland properties.
"We have five other places located around the Nebo, Clermont, Charters Towers and Georgetown areas," Mr Turley said.
Mr Turley said he had only intended on purchasing a couple of bulls in Friday's sale, but walked away with 12.
"I generally only buy grey bulls, but these red ones will do well too," he said.
Mr Turley said when selecting bulls he paid close attention to their overall structure and conformation, and was happy with the draft of bulls he managed to put together.
"I think the overall quality offered in the sale was good," he said.
"These bulls will be heading into our Basalt country at Charters Towers to be put over a mob of Brahman Charbray cows."
Mr Turley said while the crossbreds can be more fertile, it was hard to go too far from a good Brahman.
Equaling the Turleys as largest volume buyer was CAAP Holdings, Stamford, who purchased 12 greys for $4083/head.
