Overstocking concerns in the NT
The federal government of 1977 were faced with overstocking concerns on Northern Territory cattle properties, particularly in the Alice Springs area.
It was reported that there were 1.8 million head in the NT, a rise of 62 per cent in four years.
The government had already begun offering transport subsidies of 25 per cent on male cattle but announced they would increase the rate to 60 per cent for female cattle.
"Fatal accuracy" of Union questioned
The Cattlemen's Union took aim at the Australian National Cattlemen's Council labelling them representatives for specialist cattlemen throughout Australia.
Australian National Cattlemen's Council chairman Norm Seccombe said they were the only organisation which could truely claim to represent cattlemen in all parts of Australia - such as the Kimberleys, Tasmania, South Australia and Northern Territory.
"The Cattlemen's Union has only served to fragment the industry's voice, not to strengthen it," he said.
"Despite invitations to join the ANCC, the Cattlemen's Union has refused."
Ringside attractions
The Sarina rodeo boasted a prize pool of $3655 for their three-day event with the open campdraft winner taking home $800 and the buckjump category getting $320. There was a $3 stock deposit per event.
In the show ring and featured on the front page (pictured on the left), Coleshill Dairy at Alligator Creek claimed the champion pair of Friesians at the Sarina show.
The bull was named Myrtledale Lucy Dividend while the cow was Cliffdalekriss Alidus.
Wide range of stylo varieties
Another story in the 10c paper was on DPI district experimentalist Edgar Bowen growing about 40 varieties of newly-introduced stylo species for seed purposes in a trial at Theodore, Moranbah and east of Marlborough.
The aim was to uncover a suitable legume for introduction into native and sown pastures.
Early indications were that the scabra species looked promising for growth and frost tolerance.
