Nominations are open for the prestigious 2021 Charlie Nastasi Horticultural Farmer of the Year award.
Forced into hiatus in 2020 due to the COVID-19 health pandemic, the award returns this year as a feature event of the FNQ Gala Dinner in September.
FNQ Growers chair Joe Moro said the award honoured the late Charlie Nastasi, a Biboohra mango grower and industry innovator.
He said the award recognised and rewarded farming innovators and those farmers who demonstrated leadership in industry and community, with nominations accepted from the FNQ Growers region.
"Our region is well regarded as one of Queensland's most significant food bowls, and our growers are among the most innovative in the industry," Mr Moro said.
"The Charlie Nastasi Horticultural Farmer of the Year Award aims to recognise a farmer for their industry-leading contribution, either in their own operations or as part of an industry or community organisation."
Winners of the 2019 award, Frank and Dianne Sciacca, Pacific Coast Eco Bananas, Innisfail, said winning the award was recognition for the impact 'ecoganic' farming has had in restoring healthier soils to feed future generations to come.
"This is the legacy we want to leave and awards such as the Charlie Nastasi award provide the opportunity for us as the recipient to be showcased and inspire other growers to partner on this pathway to change."
