The bids flew in thick and fast for the impeccable bulls selected for the red section of the 2021 Big Country Brahman Sale.
The day one action at the Dalrymple Saleyards in Charters Towers, saw 107 red bulls sell to gross $1,777,000 and average $16,605, while reaching a peak of $90,000.
These figures blitzed what was a strong result in the red section at the 2020 sale, where 100 bulls sold to gross $895,500 and average $8955.
The $90,000 top price honours for the red section went to Ashley Kirk, Rockley Brahmans, Moura, when Rockley Magnar 266 (IVF) (PS) was snapped up by Eugene and Jess Mollenhagen, Mountain Springs Brahmans, Mt Perry, after a spirited flurry of bidding.
Mrs Mollenhagen said Magnar was exactly the type of bull they were chasing.
"He has the bloodlines, structure, colour, correctness, style and tidiness we want; we can't fault him."
It was the first Rockley bull purchased by the Mollenhagens, who will put him in a natural IVF program.
Mr Kirk was "tremendously happy" with the result provided by the 29 month-old, two-tooth, 918kg bull, with an intramuscular fat of 4.7 per cent and 40cm scrotal measurement.
"We knew he was the standout in the draft, we were quietly confident that he'd do well," he said.
"He has a great combination of beef performance and breed qualities backed up by a lot of strength in his dam pedigree (Rockley Miss Jacinta 84)."
In all, the three Rockley reds grossed $116,000.
The 25-month-old, 780kg, NCC Dandenong 4735 (ET) (PS) from Nobbs Cattle Co, Duaringa, caught the attention of the buyers panel, with the milk-tooth prospect eventually selling to Len Bode, Percol Plains, McKinlay, via an online bid for $85,000.
Studmaster Brett Nobbs said with commercial cattle prices flying high, it was great to see that momentum flowing through to the stud sector.
"Dandenong is out of a high performance donor cow with a terrific pedigree, he's deep coated, and sound across the board, he's the complete package," Mr Nobbs said.
"I used to sell Droughtmasters to Len, so it's great to be able to sell him good quality Brahmans now. He bought four of my five bulls today for a $40,250 average."
Maru Parkar 371 (ET) (PS) provided a bounty for studmaster Emanuel Mifsud, when he was purchased by Stewart Nobbs, Yoman Brahmans, Bauhinia, for $65,000.
Mr Mifsud said the 24 month-old, 832kg, two-tooth Parkar has an abundance of potential.
"His figures are great and he's a real carcase bull. He, and his two full brothers in the draft, are by the $150,000 El Toro Jomanda 802 (PS), who has crossed very well with our cattle, as was evidenced by his sons averaging $40,000 today.
"It was a great result for the red section today. Beef producers really threw their support behind what the vendors offered, and I'd like to thank them all very much."
Palmvale Red Brahmans and The Rivers Brahmans also enjoyed a great day with the studs securing $55,000 apiece for Palmvale Olympus 3857 (PS) and The Rivers S Magraw 180 (PS), respectively.
In addition to purchasing Olympus 3857, Brian and Glenda Kirkwood, Somerview Red Brahmans, Charters Towers, were also the volume vendor on the day, selling 11 bulls to gross $118,000. Len and Peter Gibbs, Muan Brahmans, Biggenden, also fared very well in selling 10 bulls at a sterling average of $17,950.
A full sale report will appear in the February 18 editions of North Queensland Register and Queensland Country Life.
