A POLICE officer credited for assisting a pilot whose plane crashed when it stalled mid-air has been named as the RFDS Queensland hero for 2020.
As a Senior Constable based at Ilfracombe outside of Longreach, Bede Little is often the first on scene when medical emergencies arise in the isolated region.
Constable Little was recognised for his commitment to helping others and for his community spirit.
He was named local hero for the Longreach region, before being voted as the outright winner out of the nine individuals or groups representing a RFDS base location.
RFDS Queensland section CEO Meredith Staib congratulated Constable Little for the win, saying he loved his work and had the outback in his blood.
Among his achievements, was providing assistance to the pilot of a light plane which crashed until the RFDS arrived.
"His work in the community extends much further than policing due to the remote nature of his beat and the struggles experienced across the region due to drought," Ms Staib said.
Constable Little joined other community members last year to organise a family fun day to unite the community, boost morale and open up conversations around mental health, with representatives of the RFDS outback mental health team invited to speak.
That event raised $4000 for the RFDS.
Ms Staib said this year's local hero award winners were an inspiring group of Queenslanders.
"To be judged our Queensland hero by way of public vote is a testament to the impact which Constable Little has no doubt had on his community," she said.
"Constable Little's actions also clearly resonated with the wider voting public, as community members statewide learnt more about his story via the local hero website.
"I'd like to extend my sincere thanks to everyone who voted and in doing so, took the time to acknowledge the wonderful work of our supporters."
Constable Little will receive a $7500 grant to give back to his community through delivering a healthcare initiative.
Ergon Energy Retail executive general manager Ayesha Razzaq said as sponsors of the award, the chance to recognise the dedicated work of Queensland volunteers was a real highlight after a tough year for many.
"The work done by Bede exemplifies the spirit of mateship at a time when looking after community has never been more important," Ms Razzaq said.
"Ergon Energy Retail is so proud to support this award which is now in its fifth year and I would like to thank the amazing collection of Queenslanders who do so much to keep the RFDS in the air."
The annual awards are supported by Queensland Country Life, Ergon Energy Retail and Seven News Queensland.
