A DRIVE-IN music festival will be held at the Burdekin in the first event of its kind for Queensland.
With live music events cancelled indefinitely due to COVID-19 restrictions on large gatherings, the Burdekin Shire Council has come up with a novel way to host a concert amid the pandemic.
Internationally acclaimed tribute acts Killer Queensland, The Fleetwood Mac Experience and The Great Creedence Revival Show will perform at the concert, with the support of local group The Boothill Express.
The drive-in 'Live at the Grounds - Mega Tribute Show' will be held at the Ayr Showgrounds on Saturday, September 19.
Each vehicle will be allocated a socially distanced 'bubble' with those travelling together required to stay in, or near-by their car, only leaving to use toilet facilities or go to the bar.
Burdekin Mayor Lyn McLaughlin said the event was the first of its kind in Queensland.
"The Burdekin has a strong foothold as the sugar cane capital of Australia - however our council staff continue to innovate and put our shire on the map in other areas with one-of-a-kind events that are of international standard," Cr McLaughlin said.
"I can't wait to welcome these showstoppers to the Burdekin with a sell-out crowd of cars.
"Each vehicle will be assigned a 'bubble' to park in - its passengers will then be treated as a family unit and can then enjoy the concert however they like within that bubble - whether they sit in their car with the windows down, set up in the tray of their ute, or groove along in camping chairs.
"Audience members will then only leave their 'bubble' to visit the bar or the bathrooms, with strict COVID Safe measures in place and regular sanitising of facilities throughout the event."
There will be a limited amount of car spaces and tickets available to adhere to mass gathering restrictions.
Tickets will go on sale soon with information to be published online at burdekintheatre.com.au.
