NEW river gauges have been installed at the Burdekin to better monitor levels during floods.
Five new automatic high stage redundancy river gauges have been installed at Inkerman Bridge, Clare, Dalbeg, Myuna and the Burdekin Falls Dam.
They will make the flood reporting network more reliable and will allow the Burdekin Shire Council and Bureau of Meteorology to better monitor and report river levels.
Burdekin Local Disaster Management Group Chair and Burdekin Mayor Lyn McLaughlin said the gauges, funded by the Queensland Reconstruction Authority's National Disaster Resilience Program, would provide a reliable backup to existing infrastructure ensuring accurate reporting of flood levels for all agencies.
"In the event of a disaster, time is of the essence - so having access to reliable technology to support our existing network is a great outcome," Cr McLaughlin said.
"In the floods following Cyclone Debbie in 2017, a gauge on the Bowen River was damaged and gauges at Dalbeg and Clare on the Burdekin River were reporting incorrectly, so having duplicate gauges for reliable and accurate reporting is essential for future weather events."
Cr McLaughlin said in the event of wet weather, the gauges would provide more accurate information allowing a better response.
