HANDY 15mm to 25mm falls are expected across a big area of South West Queensland through to the coast today (Monday).
Bureau of Meteorology modeling shows the best of the 25mm rain to be in an area bounded by Charleville, Roma, Glenmorgan, St George and north of Bollon as well as north of Dalby into the Burnett.
A bigger area through to Central Queensland is shown to be in line for 10mm to 15mm (see map above).
However, that's about the end of the precipitation for at least a week, with BoM modeling showing clear skies over western areas through to March 16.
BoM says climate models indicate only an average to below average probability of a tropical cyclone forming in the Australian region during the next week.
Monsoon break conditions are also expected to dominate northern Australia for the short to medium term.
"During monsoon break periods, rainfall typically decreases and tends to be below average over northern Australia," BoM says.
"The latest bureau climate outlooks predict drier and warmer than average conditions for much of northern Australia in the next few weeks, although much of northern Queensland was predicted to have a wetter-than-average period between March 7-13."
Monsoon break conditions are expected to develop despite the forecast presence of an Madden-Julian Oscillation pulse in a region typically favourable for enhanced rainfall across northern Australia.
"This appears to be related to the relatively low strength of the MJO as well as an absence of regional weather conditions which might be expected to transport significant moisture across northern Australia."
