FIERCE bidding ensued as the grey bulls entered the ring for day two of the Big Country Brahman sale with all bulls selling to achieve an 100 per cent clearance rate.
Bidding in the grey's reached a peak when Tony Hayne, Northern Veterinary Services, Noonamah, NT, made the winning $48,000 bid on Rockley Holyfield 150 (P) from Ashley Kirk, Rockley Brahman Stud, Bajool.
It was the only purchase Mr Hayne made during the sale, and was also his first Rockley purchase.
He said the 726kg, 30-month-old bull, sired by Doonside Mr C Eagle out of the homegrown Rockley Miss Juliet 3030, was simply, a top overall package.
"He stood out in the photos I saw of him pre-sale, and during the last couple of days, I've discovered that he also has an excellent temperament," he said.
"Being bred from a Red sire he has a lovely pigment going through him, which should provide us with a bit more vigour in his calves.
"We'll be milking (extracting semen) him first then putting him out with our stud heifers."
Also attracting attention was Brian and Cindy Hughes' Lanes Creek WT Jaxonite 1892 (P) which sold for the second top price of $46,000 to Lawson Camm, Cambil Brahmans.
Mr Camm said the 886kg 31-month-old son of Avee Jackson 451 (P) out of Willtony 314 (P) attracted his attention due to his strong polled genetics.
Lanes Creek Brahmans also achieved the top priced herd bull with Lanes Creek 1965 (P), which sold for $34,000 to Kelly Daley, Katherine Downs, Northern Territory.
A total of 141 grey bulls entered the ring to sell gross $1.402 million, averaging $9,945.
Selling agent Ken McCaffrey said the sale had been a great success with 100 per cent clearance of all bulls and heifers.
