Cloncurry Police save baby wallaby from floodwaters

Constable Megan Brock and Sergeant Jason Shea were patrolling the flooded Cloncurry bypass near the Burke and Wills Developmental Road on Tuesday, when they saw a baby wallaby stuck in floodwaters.

The wallaby was stuck in a culvert between raging floodwaters and the road when police spotted it.

Sergeant Shea said they pulled the wallaby to safety before taking it to the North Australian Veterinary Group in Cloncurry.

“We were just checking road signs when we spotted it, the poor thing was so weak it couldn’t get itself out,” Sgt Shea said.

“When we got to the vets they were very happy we had saved her and checked her over.”

Vet nurse Kate Taylor said police officers had the wallaby wrapped up nice and warm upon arrival.

“She was very cold and had minor scratches to her body from trying to get out of the floodwaters,” Ms Taylor said.

“Physically she was in good condition and was very pleased to be given a hot water bottle to cuddle up to.

“She has now been placed in the care of local wildlife carers Helen and Barry Jackson and had been called Polly after her rescuers.

“When Polly reaches 100 percent she will be released back into the wild.”

Ms Taylor said this was a timely reminder to keep an eye out for wildlife and livestock in flooded areas.

“There is a lot of water about so just be careful and keep an eye out,” she said.
