When Len Waddington and hundreds of others roll into outback Queensland later this year they will have their eyes set on smashing not one but two Guinness World Records.
Mr Waddington, the president of the Australian Motorhoming Lions Club, is playing a leading hand in setting up the club's record-setting visit to Barcaldine in May.
The club is aiming to break the record for the longest line of motorhomes as well as the record for the longest continuous stretch of rope lights.
Mr Waddington, who will be travelling to Barcaldine from his home in Gympie, said he was quietly confident the club would achieve both.
"There are two records. The first one we are going for is the longest connected image of rope lights. That came about because we thought a bit of safety could be handy.
"There is a world record held by a Chinese group, who had 655 metres.
"Already our registrations to participate are at nearly five and a half kilometres. That one on paper is well and truly smashed."
The other record the group hoped to break was for the longest parade of camping vehicles.
"That record is held by an Italian club and stands at 672," Mr Waddington said.
"Our current registrations are somewhere around 610. On average, with the number of bookings we are getting, we should break that one as well."
The idea to have a crack at the records popped up one night as club members were enjoying some cold refreshments, Mr Waddington said.
"We happened to be at happy hour with some other members – the silly things that come up at happy hour."
The idea to host the event in Barcaldine was a no brainer, and the town had been hugely helpful in getting it off the ground, Mr Waddington added.
"It's not like you can do this sort of thing just anywhere.
"And Barcaldine is experienced at this. The Campervan and Motorhome Club of Australia tried it out there in 2007."
The event will be held from May 23 to May 27, with proceeds donated to regional charities.
