THREE horses that strayed from their owners property north of Gatton have been found shot dead.
The horses were found at a large rural property at Spring Creek, with police investigating the shooting saying they had been killed over the past few days.
Police said it appeared the horses may have strayed from their owners property, possibly due to poor fencing.
They then entered thick bushland before roaming on to the large rural property where they were found dead.
Police from the Major and Organised Crime Squad (Rural) at Forest Hill who are investigating the shooting said they had spoken to witnesses and identified several people who may be able to help further with their inquiries.
Officers have urged livestock owners to inspect their fencing regularly to ensure their animals were accounted for.
“Police wish to remind owners of livestock, including horses and cattle, that you have a responsibility to ensure your fences are of an adequate standard to contain your livestock,” a police spokesman said.
"In many council jurisdictions, it may be a breach of council by-laws to have inadequate fencing.
“Police ask that livestock owners make efforts to inspect their fencing and account for all their livestock on a regular basis to ensure livestock are accounted for, and that any theft of livestock is reported to police in a timely manner.
“Property owners are also reminded that if they locate straying stock on their property, they should contact their local council’s animal control officers for advice.”
Police investigations are continuing.
