Sorting fact from fiction is just one of the advantages to be gained from attending internationally renowned north Queensland photographer, Fiona Lake’s upcoming drone photography workshop in Townsville.
To be held this Saturday, November 10, people are travelling from as far as Cloncurry and Julia Creek to access the practical, experience-based information Fiona has amassed since buying her first drone in 2016.
The workshops she’s run to date, around Queensland and in Victoria, for agricultural industry organisations, local government and rural women’s groups, have attracted a clientele that’s interested in both recreational and business uses for drone photography.
She said that after 30 years of aerial photography from helicopters, drone photography had brought a new sense of freedom to her iconic images of rural Australia.
Fiona is now one of the few Australian women to be fully licensed by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority, which regulates the safety of Australian aircraft, including drones, and was one of 10 winners of the Global Women to Watch in UAS (drones) award earlier this year.
She was also a Queensland finalist in the AgriFutures Rural Women’s Award.
Fiona’s workshop will cover a range of topics, including how to choose a drone and accessories, legal and safety information, trouble-shooting, current and future business opportunities, plus what every parent of a student drone pilot needs to know.
“This is the practical, experience-based information I wish I’d had access to when I was new to drones,” she said.
“I would have travelled a long way to get a start like this.
“It will also give experienced drone pilots, who haven’t undergone formal training, a leg-up to another level. And if you’ve crashed a drone, I might have the answer for what went wrong, to restore your confidence and avoid a replay!”
The drone industry is rapidly evolving in response to technological developments and there’s now a big range of consumer-friendly drones: starting with small machines under 100grams and $200, which are ideal for students to learn coding with, going up to $2500 quadcopters capable of many tasks including quality photography, infrastructure inspections and sophisticated mapping.
Bookings can be made via Eventbrite. For more information, go to Fiona’s website. or call her on (07) 4728 4922.
