Auctioning is not just a passion for 20-year-old, Jack Henshaw, it is a lifestyle choice.
Entering in this year’s ALPA Young Auctioneers competition, Mr Henshaw has successfully made the top 10 finalists that will compete at the Ekka in August.
Working for Landmark in Mareeba, Mr Henshaw, has already had a progressive career starting in Roma where he auctioned beef cattle at the Roma Saleyards and auctioned a few properties under Darryl Langton.
He then moved to Charters Towers where he spent two years selling beside Tony Bowen and Kerry Mills at the weekly combined agents prime and store sales; before making his recent move to Mareeba.
“I love auctioning and it’s my passion. There no better feeling then standing up at a sale auctioning well and making your vendors the most money possible and seeing a smile on their faces at the end of the day,” he said.
“You work massive hours and it is more a lifestyle than a job because you are always working, but it is a great lifestyle and I wouldn’t trade it for the world.”
Currently training and selling with mentors, Mr Henshaw has been busy preparing for the finals.
“Mentors within the company are assisting me to polish my auctioning in order to be ready for the big day,” he said.
“I think it is the pinnacle of an auctioneer’s career to go in the state competition and make it through to the national competition to sell at Sydney Royal by either winning the state competition or coming runner up. So my dream and goal is to place in the state competition at the Ekka.
“There were a lot of great auctioneers nominated this year so to get through to the state competition was exciting.”
The judges will be looking for clarity, diction, presentation, knowing the value of the cattle the auctioneer is selling and where the bid is at all times through the auction.
