Business Feature
Since 1984, Pacific Data Systems Australia has been providing robust and reliable solutions for data collection, monitoring and control applications.
Over this time, a large portion of the company’s core business has been in addressing the needs of the agricultural industry.
General manager of Pacific Data Systems Australia, Paul Gapes said the company has developed two main solutions to deal with the problems that feedlots and cattle stations face.
“Our Feedlot HLI & AHLU Weather Station to monitor the heat load index and accumulated heat load unit for livestock, and the SatVUE Smart Remote Monitoring System for monitoring water level be it for a tank, a dam or something else,” Mr Gapes said.
The Feedlot weather station includes SMS and email alarming options, providing up-to-date data, which is a crucial tool in preempting physical signs of heat stress manifesting itself among valuable livestock.
This 3G solution enables feedlot operators to be forewarned, so that they know when to implement effective heat stress management programs.
The station also integrates autonomously with Katestone’s Cattle Heat Load Toolbox.
Pacific Data Systems Australia’s other solution, SatVUE, was created after the company was approached by one of its Northern Territory clients who were experiencing issues with the 3G coverage, due to their remote location.
“They had an existing 3G system in place to monitor tank and dam water levels,” Mr Gapes said.
“But due to the intermittent and unreliable nature of network coverage in the area, and the potential damage that could have upon their livestock and general operations, they turned to us for a more robust solution,” he said.
In response, the company developed SatVUE, a reliable satellite-based device that has multiple inputs/outputs, which allows for integration with a range of sensor-types, in this case depth/level.
“Our client was initially sceptical of a satellite-based solution due to the cost of typical satellite technology - not to mention the ongoing ‘airtime’ cost.
“However, we were able to utilise our own Research and Development department to create a product in-house for less than the cost of any existing, off-the shelf product.
“The SatVUE solution is even more cost effective than radio technology, which often requires multiple repeaters, and so forth.”
