Last year’s Burdekin Shire Youth Council Mayor is urging youth to sign up and help our community.
Youth mayor Cassandra Loizou, who begins tertiary studies in Townsville this year, said being part of the organisation was a great learning experience.
“I not only gained confidence, but was a part of an astounding group that did quite a bit for the community,” Ms Loizou said.
“It was so much fun and I would definitely recommend others to join,” she said.
“One of the best parts of being youth mayor was getting the opportunity to attend many events that I otherwise would not have been able to attend.
“You also learn meeting procedures and get the pleasure of giving back to the community and that in itself is very rewarding.”
The Burdekin Shire Youth Council is a platform for younger residents to raise any issues affecting them and organise events throughout the year.
Among the events for 2016 will be the new hip hop dance workshop and community youth dance, which is planned for April. E Man will host the workshops which will be followed by The Don’t Need to Drink to Dance party. This event is being funded by the ANZ Seeds of Renewal program.
Youth Council is open to residents aged from 12 through to 25 and meets monthly.
Membership of the Youth Council is open to young people who live, work or study in the Burdekin. Application forms are available from high school offices, online at www.burdekin.qld.gov.au and the Burdekin Shire Council office.
Nominations forms must be returned by Friday, February 26. Late nominations can be arranged by calling 4783 9832.
