COMPETING in a sport you love feels even more worthwhile when it’s in support of charity which is what the Rupertswood & District Horse Club Inc Annual Barrel Race Spectacular is all about.
The Spectacular which will be held this Saturday, August 2 from 2pm will feature a great day of barrel racing action while also raising vital funds for cancer research.
Club Treasurer Sharon Yardley said several members have battled cancer over the years, which is why the club has such a deeply vested interest in cancer research.
“The charity event originated after long-time member Karen McCormack passed away from breast cancer a few years ago, this year we’re throwing our support behind the Garvan Institute of Medical Research,” she said.
“All money raised from the raffles held on the day plus a portion of the nomination fees will be going to the Garvan Institute.”
The Garvan Institute is a world leader in biomedical research, pioneering study into some of the most widespread diseases affecting our community today including cancer research.
For over 45 years, significant breakthroughs have been achieved by Garvan scientists in the understanding and treatment of diseases with one of the main priorities being cancer.
“The main events for the day will be the Open Barrel Race for ages 16 and over which has a top prize of $2000 (with $1000 guaranteed) with entry including $80 add back, and the 3D Open Barrel Race with $1500 prize money with entry including $45 add back.
“We’d like to thank our sponsors: Feed 2 Go, John Wreghitt & Sons, Ray White Bushland Beach, St George Rural Group, Lenton’s Transport, Diva’s Way Hair & Spa, Donohues and NQ Plaques and Trophies.
Free camping, toilets and hot showers are available on-site for those that wish to camp-out after the events wind-down late in the evening.
