Remembrance Day was marked in Camooweal with the presence of five Mount Isa City councillors, who took part in a short but evocative ceremony at the town cenotaph.
Some 80 young men signed up for World War I from the wider Camooweal region in 1914/15, so the council acknowledgement of their sacrifice was a fitting tribute in this Anzac centenary year.
Their service has also been recorded in a poem by Grace Wright called Camooweal Soldiers, which begins with the words: “They were drovers and ringers, they were fathers and sons, they knew how to rope and to ride”.
After mayor Tony McGrady laid a wreath, students from the state school placed their own handmade wreath and poppies at the base of the flagpole.
The community is looking forward to the installation of 80 ceramic poppies made by the Mount Isa-based Arts on Alma group. The commemorative project will be housed in a glass display case in the heritage town hall, alongside the World War I and II honour boards.
