Charters Towers Combined Agents yarded a total of 2518 cattle on May 31, consisting of 1376 prime cattle and 1142 store cattle.
The prime cattle consisted of 781 bullocks, 50 heifers, 690 cows and 81 bulls; while the store cattle yarded consisted of 781 steers, 341 heifers and 20 cows and calves.
Cattle comprised of lines of bullocks and feeder steers with cows supplied being mixed quality and condition.
Competition was again strong from meatworks and feedlotters.
The yarding was drawn from Mount Isa, Torrens Creek, Normanton, Croyden, Forsayth, Georgetown, Clermont, local and coastal areas.
Bullocks were quoted 3-5c dearer, heifers were unchanged and cows were 5-7c dearer on last week’s rates.
The prime quotes consisted of bullocks topping at 278c/kg sold on account of SA Grazing that weighed 619kg to return $1722 per head.
A pen of heavy feeders topped at 288c/kg, sold on account of RE and E Matthews that weighed 434kg to return $1249 per head.
Best priced trade heifers were presented on account of L and K Hodder which made 262c/kg to weigh 360kg and return $943 per head.
The top pen of cows were sold by DB and SZ O’Neill, for 242c/kg and weighed 469kg to return $1134 per head.
Bulls sold on account of BG and TM Hughes, topped at 285c/kg and weighed 500kg to return $1426 per head.
Store cattle were presented in some good lines of store steers coming from the Gulf region and also in smaller quality lines of steers and heifers selling to reasonable competition.
Store quotes saw a line of 12 steers on account of JB and HG Johnson, made 358c/kg and weighed 233kg and realised $835 per head.
A quality line of 213 brahman steers sold on account of Lawn Hill and Riversleigh Pastoral Holding Company, Lawn Hill, Mount Isa, averaged 303c/kg, weighed 327kg and returned $996 per head.
A good pen of 34 heifers on account of BA and LE Corbett made 290c/kg, weighed 157kg and returned a good average of $455 per head.
Cows and calves sold on account of Desley Williams which returned $875 per unit.
