KAP Federal Member for Kennedy, Bob Katter has slammed the announcement of $200m to raise the wall of Burdekin Falls stating it was a deeply destructive decision for north Queensland.
The announcement was made by the leader of the opposition, Bill Shorten, on May 3 with the announcement of generating enough electricity to power 30,000 homes under plans by the state government for an hydro-electric power station.
Bob Katter has nicely claimed that Mr Shorten was very badly briefed, as Burdekin Falls delivers nothing to north Queensland.
“He has claimed 120 jobs when the hydroelectricity at Barron River employs 24 people and it is four times the size of what is being proposed for Burdekin Falls,” Mr Katter said.
“What is on the table is Hell’s Gate, and there was not a single word about it.
“So what Bill Shorten came here to do was destroy the development project. We are going to have a mosquito attempt of plugging the wall, which gives you maybe 50-100 mega watts of electricity which is peak loads worth, spit on it, nothing.
“Hell’s Gate proposes 650 megawatts of base load power, every hour of the day, every day of the year and that is what we need for development of north Queensland.”
Mr Katter said the Hell’s Gate Dam proposal combined with the Kidston project would meet the entire requirement of electricity for north Queensland.
