Twenty-four groups and individuals are in the running of Australia Day honours in Mareeba Shire.
The council will host an Australia Day event at the Mareeba International Club on Wednesday, from 6.30pm.
The event will include the announcement of the Australia Day Awards in six categories, including the major ones being citizen and young citizen of the year.
Mareeba Mayor Tom Gilmore said Australia Day was time to reflect and celebrate the country, culture and diversity.
“It is also an opportunity for many individuals and organisations to be publicly recognised for their outstanding contribution within their community,” Cr Gilmore said.
“Thank you to the people who nominated a friend, colleague or community member for an award as it is great to be able to acknowledge and highlight the amazing contributions of our community members who donate much of their time to help others in need and provide assistance and support in our community.”
Tablelands Regional Council will host its event on Thursday at the Atherton International Club.
Mayor Joe Paronella said the region was fortunate to have a number of dedicated individuals and community groups who volunteered time to help others.
“This year’s award winners are local people who have made a real difference and this celebration gives us the chance to collectively thank them for it,” Cr Paronella said.
“They really are our local heroes.”
Etheridge Shire Council’s event will take place at Mt Surprise from 10.30am on Thursday, with a host of activities including cricket, jumping castle and a free morning tea and barbecue along with the announcement of award recipients.
