A walking tour of historic Palmer St, Townsville, will give participants an insight into the city’s past and present.
Produced by CityLibraries Local History section and the Townsville City Council’s Heritage and Urban Planning Unit, the Pubs on Palmer tour is part of council’s free Tours and Trails App, which offers a chance to learn about the history of the city through the use of Smart devices.
James Cook University history Phd candidate Rohan Lloyd researched and wrote the tour and council’s heritage research officer Ted Brandi will provide participants with the history of Palmer St pubs and take participants on a guided tour after the official launch at the library.
Community and Cultural Development Committee member Councillor Russ Cook said the Tours and Trails App offered a great opportunity to step back in time and learn about the city’s past.
“We live in a city that is rich with history and some of the pubs have the most interesting and unusual stories,” Cr Cook said.
“The Tours and Trails App was launched by CityLibraries last year as part of council’s T150 celebrations.
“This is the third tour, following Lost Townsville and The Merchants of Townsville,” Cr Cook said.
“The tours take you on self-guided walks of Townsville and through your Smartphone allow you to see which buildings once stood in certain locations and the stories behind them.
“Taking one of the tours is a great way to learn about our city and its past.”
The Pubs of Palmer trail will start at 10am on January 18.
