IT was a day filled with sideshows, sweet treats and mayhem as the iconic Royal Queensland Show officially launched the 139th Ekka today at the RNA in Brisbane.
This year, the Ekka will be going ‘back to the future’ in a celebration of both heritage and innovation, welcoming The Old Museum back to the show for the first time in 119 years.
For the first time since 1897, the heritage building will be transformed for the 10 days of show, opening it’s doors to the new Flower and Garden Exhibition presented by Envy Lawn ‘Grown For Life’ and the Quilts Across Queensland precinct, with a special Ekka rose cultivated to mark the occasion.
RNA Chief Executive Brendan Christou said the inclusion of The Old Museum was a significant historical event given the former ties to the RNA.
“From 1891-1897, the Museum was part of the Ekka grounds, but following a major economic depression the Queensland Government took over control of the building,” he said.
Mr Christou said there be many historical features to this year’s show alongside the $2.9 billion Brisbane Showgrounds redevelopment.
“While Ekka 2016 will offer plenty of action-packed entertainment and improved amenities, it will also celebrate what’s come before, which is a big part of Ekka’s cross generational appeal.
“You can’t put a price on the memories, stories and experiences of Ekka’s past,” Mr Christou said.
With more than 400,000 people expected to pass through the hallowed gates at the RNA, the show will offer brand new, world class entertainment including a spectacular new night show and never before seen fireworks display as part of the EkkaNITES program.
Mr Chirstou said he hoped visitors would enjoy the 25th anniversary celebration of the Fashion Parades – an Ekka institution and one of the headline acts of this year’s show which would incorporate a special retrospective segment.
RNA President David Thomas said he and the Ekka team were proud to be custodians of the show legacy.
“Bringing The Old Museum and the Ekka back together symbolises the importance of the heritage and the legacy,” he said, adding there would be more than 21,000 competitions entries this year across 42 sections.
“It’s my very great pleasure to officially launch the 2016 Ekka.”
For the first time in it’s history, Ekka has introduced a Two Day Pass, Super Ride Tuesday and Super Food Sunday ticket options to supercharge your Ekka value this year.
Tickets will be 15 per cent off online up until Ekka eve and remain the same price as last year for the 10 days of show if you buy online.
