The seat of Herbert could be decided by preferences, postal votes and pre-polls with counting scheduled to recommence on Tuesday, July 5.
As the situation stands The LNP’s standing member Ewen Jones is holding a three per cent holding a lead over the ALP’s Cathy O’Toole in the first preference count.
With counting completed at 40 of the 43 polling booths within the division, Mr Jones has 25,689 votes or 34.9pc of the first preference count which represents a 8.49pc slide from the 2013 election result.
Ms O’Toole is trailing with 23,063 votes or 23,063 31.3pc of the vote share for an upswing of 1.9pc from 2013, but holds the slight edge on a predicted two party preferred basis with 75.3pc of the vote counted.
She has a 37,395 votes or 50.7pc of the vote compared to Mr Jones’s 36,311 votes or 49.3pc vote share.
Mr Jones said he still feels very confident that the LNP will hold the seat.
“We have a massive pre-poll here, and we’re the only party that ran a postal vote campaign,” he said.
“We’ve got a long way to go here and obviously there has been a swing against us and obviously One Nation has played a role in that.
“Preferences are a worry, and that is something we’ve been talking about for a while here, but i think by and large I’m still very confident that we’ll hold Herbert.”
The big story of the night has been the support given to Pauline Hanson's One Nation candidate Geoff Virgo who has accounted for 9,913 votes or 13.5pc of the vote share.
Some of this vote has migrated from Palmer United Party, which has seen an 8.5 per cent swing against it, in the seat that contains the troubled Yabulu nickel refinery, wholly-owned by Clive Palmer.
