About 30 producers were on hand for the mid weigh-in of the Callide Dawson Beef Carcase Competition at the Hutchinson family’s Warnoah Feedlot at Moura last week.
Now in its 27th year, the CDBCC includes grainfed, grassfed and grain-assisted classes with cattle judged on liveweight, dressing percentage and a number of carcase attributes. Grainfed steers are fed over a 100 day period, and heifers over 70 days.
A total of 119 steers from classes five and six of the competition went over the scales last week, recording a total average daily gain of 2.4kg over 46 days.
Tied in first placed was Geoff and Alison Maynard and GL Campbell and Co with average gains of 3.52kg/day. The Gyranda Santa Gertrudis Stud took out second and third place with average daily gains of 3.43kg and 3.39kg.
Competition co-organiser, Mike Bradshaw said some important changes were also made to the 2016 program.
“We have changed the field day from Friday May 20 to Tuesday May 17 to avoid a clash with the Brahman Congress. The scoring system has also changed slightly and we would now like to advise all grass-fed exhibitors that they need to be MSA registered to avoid missing out on competition points.”
For the first time, EU accredited producers will also be able sell their competition cattle over an EU grid at the completion of the program.
Mr Bradshaw said organisers were hopeful of drawing over 500 head into this year’s event. “Given we are nearly halfway there now with the grain-fed cattle, we’re pretty confident we’ll get to 500,” he said.
