WITH another failed wet season drawing to a close, Mareeba Shire Council is taking moves to shore up support services for its drought affected areas.
The council has contracted Northern Gulf Resource Management Group to deliver drought support services. Relationships Australia and the MIF NQ will also assist.
The group’s Vickie Mylrea said the drought had created significant hardship and stress on grazing enterprises, families, individuals and local communities.
“Part of this funding will provide part-time casual positions for up to three local people, already working or residing in the drought affected area, to provide a point of contact and liaison role within the community, connecting their friends and neighbours to provide essential support and services in this time of need,” Mrs Mylrea said.
“We’re looking for community oriented people with a can-do attitude, good local networks and local knowledge of the community, good communication skills and respect for confidentiality.
“They will be provided with professional development training about drought support and mental health support services, and be required to coordinate on-property events, call around the community to raise awareness and attend community events and meetings as a spokesperson for the project.”
Currently 75 per cent the shire is drought declared. For more information contact the Northern Gulf Resource Management Group on 4092 1088 or planning@northerngulf.com.au
