Jundah’s Kerri Pidgeon and Ken Griffith have been making use of both saleyards and AuctionsPlus as they look to rebuild their herd, but they had no luck at Blackall last Thursday.
Their Hayfield property was lucky to get January rain and some follow-up, and had knee-high Mitchell grass seeding within three weeks.
“We’re running at half our numbers at the moment so we’ve been looking for replacement breeders and calves,” Ken said.
“I guess you could say we were just looking here – there’s no great urgency to buy.”
He said Thursday’s yarding showed clearly the ongoing liquidation taking place while prices were right.
“I thought the result for cows and calves was good,” he said.
They sold from a low of $810 to a top of $1300 per unit at the 1124-head yarding, averaging $1077.
Errol and Ellie Moller from Edwinstowe at Jericho sold Brahman cross cows and calves for $1300 per unit, while CW and GM Prow from Glenora at Blackall sold Charolais cross cows and calves to $1200 per unit.
Pajingo Pastoral Co at Pajingo, Charters Towers sold a large line cows and calves, of which two pens returned $1100 per unit.
Amongst the highlights were the sale of Santa/Simmental cross steers by Adams and Son at Darracourt, Blackall for 316.2 cents per kg, weighing 344kg, returning $1087/hd.
John and Nell Cameron, Romulus, Blackall sold 468kg Santa Gertrudis steers for 290.2 c/kg to return $1357.
