Heavy rainfall associated with a tropical low and the monsoon trough has continued throughout the night, with some places picking up 48 hour totals over 380mm.
Bradshaw has managed to top the list this morning, collecting a mammoth 284mm to 9am this morning with persistent heavy rain and thunderstorms. At times, the rain became so heavy that over 12mm accumulated within ten minutes. This goes down as the heaviest 24 hour total across the Northern Territory for this event so far.
In the 48 hour period to 9am today, Douglas River has managed to collect 420mm, with an additional 97.4mm in the week leading up to this event.
While the tropical low itself is expected to move in an easterly direction during the coming days, the associated monsoon trough is likely to maintain heavy showers and thunderstorms for days to come over the western Top End.
This low is forecast to move over the Gulf of Carpentaria late this evening or into Sunday morning, where the chances of it deepening to a Category 1 tropical cyclone will increase with the warm gulf waters fueling it.
