EXTENSION and funding will be the biggest challenges for Australia in tackling fruit fly, according to an international expert.
Research entomologist from the United States Department of Agriculture in Hawaii Dr Roger Vargus was one of the special guests involved with Horticulture Innovation Australia's (HIA) Fruit Fly Roadshow which wrapped up its national tour in December.
The roadshow aimed to assist growers with the management of fruit flies in today’s environment and build confidence among growers in combating the pest without the use of cover-sprays (organophosphates).
Dr Vargus said Australia's current plan and information-sharing was a good first step.
"It's a very sound approach. The problem I see in visiting these (areas) is the funding,” he said.
“More funding is needed to undertake R&D in a vast country like Australia.”
