White Ribbon Day was marked in Charters Towers for the first time recently with a breakfast held at Henry’s Café and Restaurant.
The breakfast was organised by the Zonta Club of Charters Towers. Zonta International is a leading global organization of professionals empowering women worldwide through service and advocacy.
Zonta members were joined by men and women from local community groups, businesses and schools, with event organiser Corralie Clark saying she was very pleased with the number of people who attended.
“Guest speakers during the breakfast included Charters Towers Neighbourhood Centre’s Elvene Whitbread, Life Without Barriers’ Sonya Box, Charters Towers Police Service’s Snr Sergeant Graham Lohmann and Charters Towers mayor Frank Beveridge,” Mrs Clark said.
“Each speaker touched on a different aspect of family and domestic violence and gave us a greater understanding of the seriousness of the problem and how wide ranging it is,” she said.
A quarter of the proceeds raised from the breakfast were donated towards White Ribbon projects.
White Ribbon is Australia’s only national, male led campaign to end men’s violence against women.
The campaign works through primary prevention initiatives involving awareness raising and education, and programs with youth, schools, workplaces and across the broader community.
Globally, White Ribbon is the world’s largest male-led movement to end men’s violence against women. Originating in Canada in 1991, White Ribbon is now active in more than 60 countries.
