BIT of a flashback to Beef 2015 held in May, when the world cattle industry turned its eyes on Rockhampton. There was plenty of hard work going on inside and outside the grounds to keep the event going.
No one was working harder in the show ring than six-year-old Riley Eagleson, Murgon. While competing in the led steer competition with his four-year-old brother Will, Riley encountered some resistance from his beast.
Like any good country lad does, he just put his back into it, along with most of his legs and arms as well. Eventually the steer moved on and the boys showed a glimpse into the can-do attitude of the next generation of graziers.
The steer may have wondered why something shorter than itself was doing the leading but by the end of the morning, there was no doubt who was in charge.
Chickpea-ching
CHICKPEA prices are belting along nicely it seems. The Ringer heard from a former dairy farmer whose son is now into chickpeas. So much so, an Indian interest rang the son to see what he would be doing with the crop.
The farmer informed the potential buyer he hadn't decided yet, before rejecting an initial offer at that point. A few weeks later, a transport company rang the grower to see when he'd be harvesting. A bit bemused, the farmer asked why they needed to know.
The transport mob said they'd been contacted by the Indian business and told to prepare to pick up the crop. The farmer said the Indian interest hadn't bought it yet.
"He will though," the transporter said. "So get your price ready."
Bit of Qld in NSW
THAT pearler of a national rugby league grand final is now a happy memory.
The Ringer's NSW counterpart, Oxley, had these observations:
"Not only was the temperature turned up to something akin to northern Queensland...but apparently the ANZ Stadium staff had to wheel in XXXX beer and reconfigure their taps to please the Queensland crowd. Oxley suspects VB, the national sponsor for Rugby League whose logo was prominent on the field for the big match, got the rough end of the stick on grand final day.”
