BAKED Relief, the social media initiative begun to offer food to the Brisbane flood recovery effort and now feeding the souls of so many drought-stricken graziers, is working because of its positive approach.
That's the message of founder Danielle Crismani, who told the QRRRWN conference that showing people what they could do to help in a crisis was much more useful than hopeless negative imagery that overwhelmed.
She used the example of a recent visit to Government House in Brisbane where she was asked to explain to the Governor's wife, Mrs de Jersey her project of sending smoko kits and messages from schoolchildren to drought-affected communities.
"Instead of talking about how sad it was, I told her Baked Relief sends out treats to lift spirits, and had been getting great feedback," Danielle said.
"Mrs de Jersey immediately asked how she could help, which was how we came to be sending out pots of Government House jam in our packs.
"People want to attach themselves to a positive.”
