MACKAY has gained its heaviest March rainfall in 25 years of records with 187 millimetres at the airport by mid-morning, with more to come.
It has been a very wet start to March for Mackay as it has already surpassed its monthly average of 248mm with 27 days to go. Nearby, Mt Jukes gained 289mm and Munburra Road was swamped by 327mm.
Rain is expected to continue tumbling down today and tomorrow with further heavy falls, likely in excess of 100mm. On Wednesday the precipitation will begin to ease with just a few showers possible on each day for the rest of the week.
The cause for the heavy rain is a tropical low pressure system off the Queensland coast which is directing moist unstable air over the north tropical coast.
The coastal town in Queensland's tropics has had a strange wet season with long dry breaks and a few very heavy falls.
In December, and now March, new records were set with the heaviest daily totals. In January rainfall was near average, but there were only nine rain days compared to the average of 17.
