THE drive between Tully and Cardwell has become safer with the completion of a third overtaking lane in a $20 million strategy targeted at improving the Bruce Highway in the region.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Warren Truss said the project is part of the Australian Government’s program of important infrastructure improvements in far north Queensland.
“This new overtaking lane between Dallachy Creek and Yellow Waterhole Creek will create safer overtaking opportunities, reduce travel times and improve traffic flows through this section of the highway,” Mr Truss said.
“It is the third overtaking lane to be added to the Bruce Highway north of Cardwell since June 2014. The first was built between Pungi and Dundonald Creeks, and the second between Broderick and Feluga Roads.”
Senator for Queensland Ian Macdonald said the works have strengthened a key arterial link in north Queensland.
“We are connecting people and places for the benefit of local as well as interstate road users including residents, tourists, business owners and freight operators,” Senator Macdonald said.
“Driver safety is vital on the Bruce Highway and is a priority of the Australian Government,” he said.
The works were completed on time and within budget, with an average of 42 jobs supported over the life of the project.
