A sizable crowd of cattle producers showed interest in the Droughtmaster genetics on offer at this year's 33rd annual Piggott Droughtmaster bull sale, where a Aldinga bull sold for a top of $42,500 in Springsure on Wednesday.
The Piggott family of Aldinga Park, Rolleston, sold 64 bulls on offer, representing 100 per cent clearance to gross $647,000 and a strong average of $10,109, up $3594 from the 2020 sale average of $6515.
The 100pc clearance was driven by stud and commercial buyers looking to add quiet, fertile and good carcase quality bulls to their programs.
It was Terry's brother Bradley and his wife Kerryn Piggott, Christmas Creek Droughtmasters, Rolleston, that eventually came out on top, bidding the $42,500 top price to secure Lot 4 Aldinga Lament 36 (P).
Sired by Rosewood R Leroy (P) and Aldinga 13/25 (P), the 24-month-old polled bull tipped the scales at 854 kilograms and measured 42 centimetres in scrotal circumference.
He had an eye muscle area of 133sq cm, morphology of 86pc, and P8 and rib fat depths of 11mm and 8mm respectively.
Aldinga Droughtmasters stud principal Terry Piggott said it was an "extremely good result" for the family.
"We're very happy with the result today and overwhelmed with the support from bidders and return buyers. This run of Droughtmaster bulls were probably a bit better presented than I usually have them," Mr Piggott said.
"The top bull Lament is out of a very good cow, with good breeding on the sire's side as well. We received a fair bit interest for him and we're proud to breed a type of bull that he is."
The second-top price of $20,000 was achieved several lots later when Lot 28 Aldinga Librarian 223 (P) was purchased by the Russell family at Echo Hills Grazing Company, west of Springsure.
At 20 months of age, the son of Aldinga Insight 201 (P) and Aldinga Jadalyn 54 (P) weighed 754kg, had an EMA of 133sq cm and a morphology of 66pc.
The sire-prospect had a P8 and rib fat depths of 13mm and 10mm respectively.
