Queensland Dairyfarmers' Organisation has started its first aid courses this week.
Twenty-six QDO members from North Queensland are participating in the group sessions held in Malanda and Millaa Milliaa, increasing their knowledge and capacity to respond to emergency situations on farm.
The Australian Work Health and Safety Strategy 2012-2022 identified agriculture as one of the national priority industries. The strategy set three national targets to be achieved by 2022, which aims to reduce worker fatalities due to injury, the rate of general incidence claims and incidence claims for musculoskeletal disorders.
The agriculture industry was responsible for the highest number of fatalities on average from 2013-2018. The main cause of serious injury or fatalities in the dairy industry is from vehicle incidents, an animal related injury and slipping or tripping over.
When an accident or illness happens on farm it is usually yourself, family members or your colleagues who will be the first to respond. A first aid certificate should be refreshed every three years and CPR every 12 months. QDO is currently offering half-priced* first aid courses for QDO members.
