EASY to apply pain relief gel Tri-Solfen is proving an increasingly popular standard practice product in the cattle industry, says Beaudesert Elders manager Mark Meldrum.
Mr Meldrum, who has been with Elders for 20 years and is well known for his innovative approach to rural merchandising, said producers typically continued to use Tri-Solfen after using on their calves for the first time.
"It's one of those products where once a person starts using it they don't stop," Mr Meldrum said.
"While there is generally always a gradual uptake period for new products, producers using Tri-Solfen can immediately see it improves animal welfare and increases productivity.
"Producers can see Tri-Solfen working from the moment it is applied, and any wounds seem to clean up very quickly."
Beaudesert cattle producer Steve Teitzel said he was keen to provide pain relief to his calves for routine animal husbandry practices, particularly for castration and dehorning.
"I've heard about it, and read about it, and had a good conversation with Mark (Meldrum) about it," Mr Teitzel said.
"I'm sure its something we should be using on our calves."
The blue gel contains two local anaesthetics - lignocane and bupivivaine - plus adrenalin to stop bleeding and an antiseptic to prevent infection. Tri-Solfen is applied using an applicator gun, which has recently been upgraded.
Mr Meldrum's innovative approach to rural merchandising has also seen the Beaudesert branch established as a leader in supply of equipment to the honey industry.
