A WOMAN has died after a collision on the Bruce Highway south of Cairns this morning.
The 45-year-old Mount Sheridan woman died after her car veered into the path of a semi-trailer at Edmonton about 8am.
Police said preliminary investigations indicted the woman was driving her silver Toyota sedan south on the highway, when it veered into the path of an oncoming semi-trailer, travelling in the opposite direction.
A car travelling behind the Toyota also smashed into that car.
The Toyota's driver died at the scene.
The 46-year-old male truck drive, and a 72-year-old man who was driving the other car were not injured.
On Sunday, four people died within hours of each other after two separate crashes near Townsville.
In each instance, police believe the crashes involve drivers crossing on to the wrong side of the Bruce Highway into the path of oncoming vehicles.
The first fatality happened after three cars collided near Yabulu about 9am. One car flipped on its roof and a 52-year-old Deeragun man died at the scene.
Just hours later, four cars collided at Mount Surround, south of Townsville about 12.30pm.
Police said initial investigations reveled a Ford Falcon travelling south on the Bruce Highway collided with a Mitsubishi Pajero travelling north. Two cars behind the Pajero were unable to avoid the collision.
The 56-year-old male driver of the Ford Falcon died instantly.
A 72-year-old man and 70-year-old woman, both from Mundingburra, in the Mitsubishi Pajero also died at the scene.
The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating and drivers who witnessed the crashes or have dash cam footage have been urged to contact police.
