The boys in green were tough to beat during the ALPA Young Auctioneers Competition at Silverdale on Thursday.
Nutrien Injune's Brodie Hurley proved that his time in the Southern Hemisphere's largest selling centre has paid off, coming out on top of the 2020 Queensland competition.
The 24-year-old beat nine other rising stars of the industry in a competition which many 'old hands' believed could be anyone's to win.
Brodie said he was "completely stoked" to take out the win.
"I didn't think it would ever happen. This is my second turn and obviously I hoped to win, but I never expect it," he said.
"I thought it was pretty even through the whole line-up, and any one of the boys could have won it."
With the Ekka cancelled in 2020 due to the current health crisis, the usual staging grounds for the competition was no longer available, but committee members were determined to see the event go ahead.
Brodie said selling at the Silverdale Saleyards was more like the work they do week in, week out and it had taken a bit of the pressure off the surreal nature of selling in Brisbane.
Standing alongside Brodie at the fall of the gavel was debutante Justin Rohde.
Representing Nutrien Rockhampton, the youngest man in the line-up held his nerve at the rail to be named runner up.
Justin said it had been a terrific learning experience but it was "pretty surreal".
"This was my first year of the competition, so I'm very honoured and very privileged to be able to be in the competition in the first place," he said.
"[Being runner up], it's an added bonus."
Justin said he'd had a few nerves on the way down from the Beef Capital.
"Once I was on the rail I felt a little bit more at home, but certainly some nerves with some quality cattle in front of me and plenty of professional buyers."
