A MAN is in a critical condition after coming off his quad bike on a remote property in Far North Queensland.
The 58-year-old man was travelling along a remote access road in Mutchilba on the Atherton Tablelands when he lost control going down a dip about 5.30pm on Saturday.
The man fell off and sustained critical injuries.
Police said the man had suffered serious head, chest and shoulder injuries and was flown to Townsville Hospital in a critical condition.
It comes as the Australian Competition and Consumer Committee moves to make it mandatory for roll-over protection devices be fitted to quadbikes.
ACCC deputy chair Mick Keogh said the devices would save lives.
"We already have nine fatalities due to quad bikes this year, all of them involved quad bikes without operator protection devices," Mr Keogh said.
However, quad bike manufacturers Honda, Yamaha and Polaris have indicated they will pull their quad bikes from the Australian market, with Honda citing the impossibility of meeting the new safety standard.
