A starter mob of steers purchased from his grandfather last year has been a good investment for Barcaldine's Hugh Chandler.

The 16 Santa Gertrudis-Droughtmaster cross 12-month-old steers were bought for $600 and were sold with 23 of his parent's cattle at the Blackall weaner sale on Thursday for an average $1580 a head.

Hugh's father Will Chandler said he'd told him to frame the sale result.

"I told him, that's the first and last time you'll ever see that," he said.

The steers plus 25 heifers had been weaned off cows at Hillalong, Barcaldine, mid-last year and run at Oma, Isisford until Thursday's sale.

The lead pen of 10 sold for 408.2c/kg, weighing an average of 426.5kg to return $1740.97 a head.

The other six head sold for 390c/kg, at 380kg, to return $1482/head.

Hugh Chandler, who left school last year, said he'd be banking the money to continue buying and selling cattle.

"It's a good starting point for my first sale," he said, adding that he had put black bulls over the heifers he'd bought.

Blackall Combined Agents yarded 5500 cattle at the monthly weaner and store sale, described by MLA as a very good quality yarding with larges lines of cattle drawn from local areas as well as the north west of the state.

There was very strong competition from southern Queensland feedlots as well as restockers from NSW, and most categories saw improvements in prices in line with the rest of the state.

Light weight restocker steers sold to 462.2c to average 415c, restocker steers, 280-330kg, topped at 428.2c with most around 400c and medium weight feeder steers made to 408.2c to average around 375c/kg.

Heavy feeder steers were in large supply and saw prices lift to 408.2c with most sales around 378c/kg.

Light weight restocker heifers saw strong demand, selling to 450c to average 411c, while restockers heifers sold to 385c to average 350c and heifers to feed made to 378.2c to average 350c/kg.

One large line of PTIC grown heifers topped at 310c and cows and calves made from $1440 to $2010 to average $1700/unit.

Over 5500 cattle were yarded at Blackall's monthly weaner sale on Thursday.
