The unequivocal need for transformational change is clearly driving the development of the Dairy Plan. There is a now a very real need for fresh perspectives and strong leadership across all organisations that operate in and for our industry.

Chief among the organisations expected to be at the forefront of change is our national advocacy body, Australian Dairy Farmers. In theory, ADF is the lead organisation behind the Dairy Plan. As such, its own structures and the people who make up ADF, need to be at the forefront of the transformational change the industry is demanding.

As a member of ADF's National Council, I work closely with the ADF including its board across many policy and industry issues. The National Council also advises the board of opportunities to improve the implementation of the ADF Strategic Plan. While the National Council works to assist ADF to become a transformational leader, it needs the backbone of good strong people on the board to lead ADF.

I believe our members need to see the election of a new board member who is looking for change and improvement in how things are done rather than someone who sees nothing wrong with the way things are currently operating.

In my role as the president of QDO, I know that leadership positions such as mine and those on the ADF board inevitably attract criticism and detractors. It is an unpleasant part of the business. But, since we are responsible for helping farmers to make a profit, it is a position and responsibility that I don't take lightly.

This current opening on the ADF board comes at a critical time. It allows grassroots farmers to elect a person who opposes the status quo and is pro transformational change on a significant scale.

While only open to those farmers who have actively joined ADF, it is an important election. All members should make an effort to review the candidates and cast their vote to ensure change will occur.
