Four leading primary producers from Queensland and the Northern Territory have been awarded prestigious Nuffield Farming Scholarships for 2020.
Announced at the Nuffield National Conference Awards Dinner in Brisbane this week, the 2020 Scholars will each receive a $30,000 bursary to travel the world conducting innovative research into their chosen study topics.
The 2020 Nuffield Scholars from Queensland and the NT are Tess Camm, St Lawrence, Brooke Barkla, Toowoomba, Nicholas Krebs, Moura and Tammy Kruckow from Manbulloo Station near Katherine, NT.
Supported by The Yulgilbar Foundation, Ms Camm will investigate ways to increase the value of beef co-products, particularly their potential use in biodegradable packaging, opportunities in emerging markets for nutritional and pharmaceutical products, and alternatives to the rendering process.
Brooke Barkla is supported by ANZ Bank and Nuffield Australia Alumni and will research the socio-economic impacts of the Australian live export industry in existing and emerging markets.
Moura's Nicholas Krebs is supported by Meat & Livestock Australia, and will investigate new ways to attract and retain more people into beef enterprises and help position the industry as a long-term career choice.
Nuffield Australia Interim CEO, and 2013 Scholar, Jodie Redcliffe, also congratulated Tammy Kruckow from the NT. Supported by the AACo, Tammy is looking at innovative ways to better retain staff in remote areas.
"With generous support from her investors, Tammy's research will pave the way for more resilient and robust NT businesses," Ms Redcliffe said.
"We congratulate Tammy on her achievement and look forward to hearing about the successes and challenges she experiences throughout this Nuffield journey."
Speaking from Brisbane, Nuffield's Queensland State Committee Chair and 2014 Scholar, Nigel Corish, said the 2020 Queensland Scholars and their study topics demonstrate the resourceful and forward-looking nature of the state's agricultural sector.
"Queensland is home to many Nuffield Scholars, and we're excited to welcome our newest recruits, Tess, Brooke and Nicholas into the community as they share our vision to produce positive change for primary producers and the agricultural sector as a whole," Nigel said.
"These Scholars reflect the next generation of talent in Queensland farming.
"Their innovative study topics cover key aspects of agricultural production, from strengthening supply chains and boosting the value of beef, to researching the socio-economic impacts of live export in overseas markets, and positioning agriculture as a long-term career choice."
Queensland Country Life and the North Queensland Register are proud supporters of the Nuffield National Conference.
