Far North Queensland commercial beef producers will be able to get firsthand insight into some of the best cattle available in the region at the inaugural Tablelands Better Beef Open Day on Sunday, August 4.
Nine leading studs situated in the Atherton Tablelands will simultaneously open their gates on the day to showcase a host of Bos Indicus and Bos Taurus breeds.
Event committee president Nick Trompf said the aim of the day is to give commercial cattlemen a chance to travel from property to property inspecting bulls and females for sale from the participating studs.
"The organising committee, including representatives from four of the studs, has spent months refining the Open Day," he said.
Mr Trompf said the concept had been developed after the breeders had spent many years improving the quality of their seedstock.
"In the past there has been a misconception among some commercial producers that to access top quality bulls they had to travel south and spend their money in central and southern Queensland.
"Today that's not the case. There are cattle bred on the Tablelands which are top class - and have been selling across Australia and in some cases to overseas."
Mr Trompf said key agricultural industry suppliers have come on board as sponsors including Malanda Rural Supplies, Tableland Veterinary Services, Landmark, Tableland Fertilisers, ANZ bank and Advanced Rural.
He said the open day concept had been become increasingly popular in southern markets, and that they're what the Tablelands Better Beef Open Day has been modelled after.
"For example in Victoria, where their Beef Week has been running for more than 30 years, commercial and stud breeders eagerly look forward to the event as they plan continual improvement in their herds.
"Literally hundreds of bulls and females worth millions of dollars are sold at Beef Week each year. Breeders jump in their car and travel around for the day, typically visiting five to six properties to gather a comprehensive understanding of the seedstock available for purchase."
